we wanted to capitalize on the passions of the world's youth.
Three hundred and thirty cheering students, standing united, eyes shining with excitement, emitting a powerful energy into the air that invigorates the entire room with inspiration; standing ovations can be extraordinary experiences. I remember standing in the University of British Columbia’s CIRS building that day in August 2012, when after working together with a team of students at the International Baccalaureate World Student Conference, we presented our video project idea for the Global Green Alliance. We wanted to connect all these passionate students together in a way that created real change, even though we were all from different countries. Looking out into my sea of peers, my heart was filled with passion, hope, excitement, and overflowing energy to put this idea into reality; I still remember how limitless each of us felt in that moment. These were the beginnings and the inspiration for the Global Green Alliance: a youth-run organization, a lesson, and a philosophy.
The G.G.A. is an organization. Since its inception in August 2012, the Global Green Alliance has grown from a simple environmental project idea with a few passionate youth into a registered, youth-run non-profit organization, with the mission to connect environmental clubs and youth groups with the resources they need to create successful, sustainable change in their communities. With chapters in countries worldwide, the G.G.A. holds events such as the International Sustainability Conference to promote collaboration between youth to create environmental projects in their schools, while helping schools start new clubs and improve existing programs. As the Founder and President of this organization, it has been extremely rewarding to work with ambitious youth on the Board, and see youth attend conferences similar to the one in which my own passion was ignited.
The G.G.A. is a lesson. In its first year, the G.G.A. experienced many challenges. Over time, the team has put their full focus and passion into tying up the ends and making G.G.A. a vision-oriented and purposeful organization. Though challenging, it has paid off when others told us that our work had inspired them to start their own initiatives, and in this way, the G.G.A. is a lesson in understanding the impact that focused effort and passion can have in bringing about true change in the world.
The G.G.A. is a philosophy. It is being able to turn dreams into reality. It is wanting to inspire others and sharing the philosophy of hard work and passion. At the International Sustainability Conference, we do exactly that by creating workshops and bringing speakers to speak about sustainability. We want to instill in youth the same sense of passionate energy we did there a year ago. Through this way, we have used the G.G.A. as a tool to inspire others and manifest a philosophy.
The Global Green Alliance has become a vibrant community that continues to grow everyday, shaped by the ideas of innovative youth who are shameless in their idealism and inebriated with their own inherent limitlessness. Standing in unity, the youth of today are going to make a noise greater than the loudest standing ovation, and we hope that the world is ready.
